Don’t scan at any more than 300 dpi (dots
per inch). This is a good compromise between quality and
file size. Most scanning software will allow you to enlarge
the image size, so if you have a small photo and you need an 8 x 10
photo to go on a plate, set up the software to output to
the 8 x 10 size. Keep in mind that you will still lose some
quality when you enlarge the photo, but by enlarging at the time of
scanning you will lose the least amount of detail.
